Azumino is a countryside spreading at the foot of the mountains of the North Alps. There are also many sightseeing spots, such as the King’s Wasabi Farm using pure spring water, various art spots, cafes surrounded by greenery and tasteful hot springs.

1. Spot Ranking in Azumino area
5th. Hotaka Shrine
It is an old shrine which is listed in the Engi-Shiki as of the highest rank in Nagano prefecture and in the national history from the beginning of the Heian period. There is Okumiya near Myojin ike in Kamikochi and it is also called “Total guardian of the Japanese Alps” because it worships Hotaka no mikoto. The worshiping time is from 8:30 to 17:00. No holidays, the precincts are free to visit.

4th. Todoroki Residence
Todoroki-ke is an old family that thrived from the Muromachi Period. A mansion used as a main shrine when the lords of Matsumoto fish salmon and shoot ducks is open to the public. A garden with features of the middle term of Momoyama period and a majestic Nagayamon are the main attractions. Business hours are from 9:00 to 16:00, and the holiday is from December to March.

3rd. Rokuzan Art Musium
Works by Mr. Ogiwara Morie (Rokuzan), a sculptor born in Azumino who was active in the Meiji era, are on display. Representative works such as “Women” designated as an important cultural property of the country are displayed. Works by Mr. Kotaro Takamura, a friend of Rokuzan, are also exhibited in a separate building. The time is from 9:00 to 17:10 (from November to February to 16:10). Regarding the closing period, Monday and the next day of holidays are closed from November to April, but other periods are open.

2nd. Chihiro Art Museum Azumino
At the Chihiro Art Museum Azumino, works of world famous picture book writer, Iwasaki Chihiro and works of picture book artists from around the world are displayed. There are also a picture book room where you can browse about 3000 domestic and international picture books, a museum shop, and a picture book café with a menu using ingredients from Nagano. Business hours are from 9:00 to 17:00 (Golden Week holidays and Bon Festival is to 18:00), and the second and fourth Wednesday is closed. Also, in the case of a holiday, it is open but the next weekday is closed. Please note that there are other winter closed and temporary closing for exhibition change as well.

1st. Daio Wasabi Farm
It is a sightseeing spot with a vast wasabi farm of about 150,000 ㎡. You can not only look at the spectacular scenery of the North Alps and the Wasabi farm, but also you can experience the river flowing in clear boat, taste wasabi gourmet, and experience wasabi picking. Entry is free. Business hours are from 9:00 to 17:20 (November to February from 9:00 to 16:30) with no holiday period.

2. Getting to Hotaka station from Matsumoto station
From Matsumoto station to Hotaka station, take the JR Oito Line and head for Hotaka station. It takes about 30 minutes and the fare is 320 yen.Details
